I think I see what you mean Adam. For me it’s how you reflect. If it’s rational reflective thinking, great, which is a form of learning, or as you put so well “an important growth step”. I love Ray Dalio’s principle: Pain + reflection = progress. But if you are emotionally attached to your thoughts on the matter, I think that is highly problematic, and what I call here “stressing”.
